Crossing The Channel Choosing the way to get there is not always easy as it depends on so many factors, but it is generally the case that the shorter the drive, the longer the ferry crossing and vice versa. However, here are a few points based on the experiences we and other guests have had.
The ferry crossing to Cherbourg is fairly quick but getting down the Cherbourg peninsula can be time consuming as it is not always dual carriageway. We generally use Portsmouth to Caen 0745 which gets in at 1445 with 3-4 hours to drive to the cottage. A cheaper crossing is the afternoon one at 1330 but you will end up getting to the cottage around 0030 and if you haven't done it in the dark before you may get lost coming out of Caen!
We have travelled on ALL the Ferries that cross the western channel so always ask the ferry company which boat will be making the crossing as some of the boats have better facilities than others.
Recommended Boats: Brittany Ferries - Normandie, Val de Loire, Bretagne, Barfleur and the new Le Mont St Michel. P&O - Pride of Bilbao, Pride of Portsmouth, Pride of Le Havre

Driving The main roads are excellent and usually traffic free, but be aware of speed limits as the French Gendarmes have the power to spot-fine. Always carry enough tools for a roadside emergency and ensure that your mobile phone has had "roaming" enabled before you leave the UK (Roadside phones are few and far between).

The Garden

The garden consists of 500 metres of lawn, planted areas and a patio area, which affords uninterrupted views and sunsets across the valley, wonderfully placed for a perfect evenings BBQ. More...
