The Village of Saint Nicodemé

Our small village is set amidst undulating countryside in the heart of Brittany. The Church of Saint Nicodemé has been recently lovingly restored.

The Cottage is set on the edge of our village, in the heart of Brittany with wonderful views across the Valleys. Nearby are gorges, lakes and viewpoints. The location allows one to visit all of the many attractions of Brittany with ease.

Local restaurants have plentiful Plat du Jour (4-6 course meals including wine) for nine Euros. Locarn, Callac, Rostrenen and St Nicolas-du-Pelem all offer good eating places, all within an easy drive.

Other Local Villages

The vicinity is recognised as being an area of outstanding beauty. A number of English people have chosen to live here. Between our village and Locarn is the Gorges du Corong – which forms part of an environmentally protected area securing the habitat of many species. There are Menhirs (Standing Stones) to be seen and walks of various lengths which take in this Ice Age valley.

The Village itself whilst being small has a fine church and an excellent inexpensive restaurant (one of many locally).

Callac
Within easy distance, a fair sized town. There are two supermarkets, a few hotels near the Railway Station (from here it is possible to get a train to Paris). There are leisure facilities, together with a Lake. There are numerous places to eat. Market day is on a Wednesday. You can purchase English Newspapers (day old) at the Newagents in the Square the proprietor also speaks good English. Wine may be purchased at a Cave here – being of good quality.

Carhaix
It is a large town, there are a number of fine restaurants, together with many sorts of takeaways; not least of its boasts (sorry to say) is a McDonalds. Carhaix being larger than Callac with all the facilities of a large town. This too is where to find the nearest hospital with an Emergency Facility. A large weekly Market takes place of a Saturday.

Carhaix has a festival each year, which would rival that of Glastonbury – now known throughout France it has just celebrated its tenth anniversary.

Saint Nicolas du Pelem
Saint Nicolas du Pelem has a boulangerie, 2 banks, Tourist Office, a well stocked Super U supermarket and garage. There are also range of places to eat and drink such as Gwendoline's Pizzeria, Le Petit Bouffe Bar and the Auberge Kreisker (which servers good value lunchtime meals at about 9 euros including wine).

If you want to travel a little further a field there is the Auberge Pellinec at Canihuel (approx 15 minute drive) which overlooks a beautiful lake and is open both lunchtime and evenings. The host Patricia and Oliver are very welcoming and have a superb menu at very reasonable prices. If you want to treat yourself there is the 5 course Gourmet menu at 32.50 euros, you will not be disappointed. This is cuisine presented as good as it gets!

In Rostrenen you will find several banks, boulangeries, Post Office, Chemists, Doctors (Dr.Rault – excellent –eng speaking), Tourist Office where you can find information on the area, local places of interest and events that might be occur during your visit and 4 supermarkets.

There are also several places to eat and drink, including the Coeur de Breizh which offers traditional Breton cuisine, the Henry IV (the seafood platter is especially good) and a number pizzerias. All are surpassed by the gourmet Restaurant L'Eventail.

Every Tuesday is market day in Rostrenen, where you will find a range of stalls offering locally grown produce together with, homemade cheeses and breads, fresh fish and cooked meats.
Rostrenen is also known for it's Dañs Fisal Festival (a festival of Breton folk dancing and music), which is held in August complete with a fairground for the kids.

Kergrist Moelou
